Donut Baker with 47 varieties of doughnuts has you spoilt for choice
Sweet Fantasy You get every kind of doughnut here
Anyone brought up on all those hard-boiled American detective novels needs no introduction to doughnuts. That was the standard breakfast for all the tough-as-nails cops. They would munch on a doughnut and was quite the American standard, like baseball and mom’s apple pie.
There was also the horrid snitch in ‘Midnight Run’ who would leak information, going out on the pretext of getting a doughnut. These calorific godsends have apparently been on the good earth from forever with the Dutch claiming to have brought it to America. But there is reportedly also archaeological evidence of the Native Americans making pastries since prehistoric times. As for who invented the hole and the fillings and the rest of it is all jolly conjecture and quite beside the point of this delectable oil soaked, jam-stuffed comestible.
And while we have our very savory doughnut <think crispy vada> and our bakeries make totally rocking sugar-kissed doughnuts, we have the Geneva-based Global Franchise Architects to thank for bringing Donut Baker to town.
There are 47 varieties of doughnuts in a variety of shaped from the traditional ring shaped to the equally traditional braided one, which is called cruller. The toppings range from chocolate and flakes to coconut and honey. Being a bit of a traditionalist, I loved the glazed doughnut which was the right mix of crispy sweet on the outside and moist and yielding on the inside. And the fillings take you to another realm altogether.
There is jelly, jam, chocolate and the most mind-blowing of them all is the cream. It is surely to die for.
The dobite, which is the ball of dough from the centre of the ring shaped doughnut, is nothing to write home about. It comes in a variety of flavours with toppings and the rest of it but is not all that interesting.
The doughnuts are made fresh three times a day and doughnuts not consumed within eight hours are discarded – definitely the problem of plenty.
Ingredients come from around the world. The flour is from Australia, the chocolate and fillings from Belgium while the vanilla comes from Cuba. And if you are thinking with a sinking heart on the effect of these many food miles on the environment, maybe you just have to smother the conscience with some more Choco- chips.
Coffee and iced tea is served along with all the goodies and there are no plans as of now to include savories – the vada would be the right fit
The doughnuts start from an incredible Rs. 9 and there are some interesting combo sets priced between Rs 49 for three dobites and beverage and RS. 144 for four doughnuts and eight dobites.
